PAS: Prioritising Pedestrian Safety

When we think of pedestrians, we tend to imagine people walking freely on the street, adhering to traffic rules and ensuring their safety to prevent accidents. However, pedestrians also exist in industrial areas where they share spaces with a variety of vehicles. In these environments, it is equally crucial to follow safety regulations to protect physical integrity.

Some of these regulations are like those we encounter in our daily lives, but others require a different approach. This is where the PAS (Pedestrian Alert System) developed by Claitec comes in handy. One of our most in-demand solutions, this system has been designed to identify workers in areas where they must share workspaces with vehicles such as forklifts, and where physical separation between them is impossible – that is, areas where the risk of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians is very high.

The number of scenarios where these situations can occur is countless, as each environment has its own unique characteristics. However, in all cases, the solution is the same: to ensure the clear identification of pedestrians. Claitec’s PAS is a personal tag that helps locate them and be detected by forklifts within a configurable safety distance. The forklifts themselves must also be equipped with the PAS system. It is key to emphasise this point, as it is the basis for the system’s proper functioning: the pedestrian must always carry the tag; otherwise, they will NOT be identified.

The tags are small keychains that can be attached to different parts of the work equipment. The pedestrian will barely notice its presence, but this small device will be protecting them at all times, ready to alert them when a danger is nearby. At Claitec, we have developed two different tag models: the T10 and the T10-R, the latter being an evolution of the T10 with notable improvements over its predecessor.

Once the person is correctly equipped, we must also equip the forklifts with an AC-50 activator, which will be responsible for communicating with the tag within its detection range. Of course, the system and its operation require correct installation and configuration, as well as other elements such as range antennas. We could detail the operation of each device, but the purpose, or rather, the message we want to convey in this text is much broader and simpler at the same time: the PAS system protects pedestrians in their workplaces.

However, when we talk about people in motion, the risk is not limited only to cargo vehicles. A frequent example of danger is access to restricted areas by unauthorised personnel. It is common, either due to carelessness or recklessness, for a worker to access areas that require specific preparation and equipment, exposing their safety and that of their colleagues. For this reason, one of the main components of the PAS system – personal tags – is complemented by other solutions created by Claitec to prevent these risks as well.

In these cases, the T-10R also becomes a great ally. For example, it can restrict access to areas where authorisation is required, complementing it with the AV-30 verification antenna and a PSG gate (Pedestrian Safety Gate). Authorised personnel will carry a T-10R to be identified by the security antenna when entering the restricted area. Once the antenna confirms that the person is authorised, it will give the order to lock or unlock the PSG gate.

These are just a few examples of how the PAS system and its devices work, but there are many more applications. At Claitec, we have a team of experts with extensive experience, committed to always providing a solution that fits the needs of each workspace.
