On many occasions, workplace accidents in industrial areas involve forklift trucks, which complicate the assessment of consequences, both in terms of materials and, more importantly, with regard to people’s safety. Unfortunately, many of these incidents could be prevented through proper control and maintenance of these vehicles. However, at times, this responsibility is overlooked under the mistaken belief that it will enhance productivity and task execution times.

The benefits of maintaining strict control over the condition of forklift trucks are numerous, and safety is an obvious reason why these inspections should be carried out regularly. Additionally, early detection of wear and tear on these vehicles is highly advantageous in preventing costly future breakdowns of greater severity.

For this reason, Claitec has integrated the “Checklist” function into our driver assistance solution known as Copilot. Drivers of forklift trucks equipped with this system must perform a series of checks generated randomly by Copilot before operating the machine on a regular basis.

During these inspections, various levels of problems can be identified, and Copilot will categorise them as minor or critical, taking appropriate measures and having the ability to transmit this information to another of our prominent solutions, the Safeyu platform if available. Through Safeyu, vehicle control personnel can configure checklist questions for Copilot to present randomly, thus preventing them from being memorised and answered routinely.

Furthermore, they will receive notifications about the responses, which enables the maintenance of a detailed records about who used the vehicle and what checks were conducted.

If the Safeyu platform is not available, Claitec will be responsible for programming the checklist under the client’s suitable instructions.

These are just some of the benefits obtained when conducting quality inspections:

• The pre-check via Copilot enhances safety and keeps operators informed about the vehicle’s condition.

• Increased operational safety, as vehicles can only be started after an inspection.

• Digital reports and records of results with the option to connect directly to the Safeyu platform.

• Regular vehicle condition checks.

• Real-time automatic email notifications in case of damage or irregularities in the vehicle.

• Ability to configure the question checklist.

• Comprehensive record of all defined questions and answers.

In any industry where forklifts or other types of mobile machinery operate, there is a real risk of collisions and accidents. These hazardous situations can be caused by various factors, such as reduced visibility due to blind spots, intersections in narrow aisles, or areas with limited manoeuvring space for drivers.

The Cas-G2 system developed by Claitec provides an effective solution to address these issues by alerting drivers to the presence of nearby vehicles. The installation of Cas-G2 on the forklift is straightforward and allows for the configuration of different detection zones that can cover up to 40 meters, enhancing safety and production efficiency by distinguishing between objects and vehicles.

The Cas-G2 system offers numerous advantages. In this post, we will focus on one of its most innovative features: the Group Function.

What does this function entail?
The anti-collision system Cas-G2 allows different groups of machinery operating in the same workspace to be differentiated, thereby helping to prevent accidents and improve the coexistence of vehicles.

For example, forklifts equipped with the Cas-G2 system can be detected by AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) operating in the same space simultaneously, avoiding collisions. However, these AGVs may not detect each other when unnecessary, facilitating a smoother, safer, and more productive workflow.

It is possible to create up to 8 different groups of machines

It’s also essential to highlight that the Cas-G2 system seamlessly integrates with other solutions developed by Claitec, increasing overall effectiveness and allowing drivers to focus on their tasks, knowing that safety is the company’s top priority. This, in turn, boosts confidence and contributes to an optimal working environment.

Today, we would like to introduce the uses and benefits of the Impact Sensor, an innovative and practical system that provides significant assistance in monitoring and recording impacts experienced by work vehicles in different industries. It helps address the causes of incidents, aiming to prevent future accidents and enhance health and safety at work.

The Impact Sensor system consists of a device designed to capture and measure impacts occurring on a work vehicle and to report collisions to the Safeyu platform. This platform connects workers and vehicles in a way that identifies real-time risk situations and provides preventive alerts. Simultaneously, it generates a record for drawing conclusions regarding prevention, health, and occupational safety.

The Impact Sensor is a part of the PAS system, and it communicates directly with the Copilot, an innovative and highly practical tool that complements the work of drivers and assists them in their tasks. The Copilot is designed to facilitate and enhance information from safety systems. It is a touchscreen device with multiple functions. It allows for a safety checklist of the forklift before use, displays forklift and personnel detection, or indicates if the forklift has been involved in a collision, among other uses.

How does the Impact Sensor System work?

For the operation of this impact recording and measurement system, work vehicles must have the device installed on their chassis, typically on a flat surface. When the vehicle experiences a collision, the impact sensor receives the information through the chassis’ shaking and immediately sends it to the Copilot. The driver is notified that an accident has occurred.

Subsequently, through the Safeyu platform, you can access information about the impact’s force, direction, and general information about the involved vehicle. This allows for ongoing monitoring of the situation and decision-making to further reduce risks and enhance safety in industrial workspaces.

At Claitec, we are constantly listening to our clients’ feedback as we see this as the only way to be in tune with our their needs and to provide them with flexible and creative solutions that truly enhance their daily operations, strengthen security in workspaces, and prevent many accidents.

It is in this back-and-forth with our customers, in this sincere and productive exchange, that we have discovered that the AV-30 Verification Antenna emerges as a highly valuable tool, as it can also offer solutions for access control in industrial spaces. Specifically, we see that many customers request the AV-30 device to be installed alongside the PSG System – Pedestrian Safety Gate – for access control using T-10R/BADGE tags.

So, to access the protected area, the user must carry the T-10R/BADGE tag, pass near the AV-30 antenna, and gain access, for instance, to the warehouse or restricted workspace. If they don’t have a tag with them, or if the tag’s battery is low or not functioning correctly, the Antenna will not grant permission, and the PSG electromagnet will not open.

Furthermore, in the case of common doors which, are equipped for example with an electromagnetic lock, many of our customers have also chosen to install the AV-30 antenna so that workers entering hazardous or heavily trafficked areas – such as those with forklift traffic -, can only gain access if they carry the tag. This helps prevent risks and reduces workplace accidents.

The AV-30 device stands out on its own merit compared to previous versions. Among other things, it is a more compact solution, capable of performing both functions – verification antenna and access control – seamlessly. It is also easier to install, saving time and increasing efficiency, and it can be wall-mounted or, using accessories, placed on a post.

The coexistence between machinery or work vehicles and operators within the same workplace can be extremely challenging. However, with proper planning and the right tools, it is possible to achieve the safe interaction of humans and machines in industrial spaces, reducing risks and preventing workplace accidents.

Claitec has have developed various solutions to enhance safety standards and prevent workplace accidents. The 3 tools highlighted below are just some of the devices we can use to improve the coexistence of machinery and operators within the same workspace.

1) PAS Solution: One of Claitec’s flagship tools that continues to prove its effectiveness day after day for our customers! The Pedestrian Alert System (PAS) alerts forklift drivers when it detects a person within adjustable distances of 1 to 11 meters. It is a unique system capable of differentiating between people and objects, and it can even detect operators behind a wall or a shelf. Pedestrians simple wear a tag which, when detected by the system installed on the forklifts, alerts the driver with light signals. The warning received by the driver immediately warns him or her that there is a person near their work area, enabling them to take necessary precautions and avoid issues.

2) PSG Gate: The PSG (Pedestrian Safety Gate) is a safety gate designed to reduce risk situations in workspaces. This system has two functionalities: creating safe pedestrian crossings and restricting entry to unauthorised personnel. The PSG can also be easily combined with other solutions to stop pedestrians from crossings if a forklift is detected nearby, even in low-visibility areas. It can be supplied with additional features such as traffic lights, other visual indicators, sensors, and manual emergency buttons.

3) VSG Door: The Virtual Safety Gate is a virtual gate that activates when access is prohibited in a specific area or intersection, alerting traffic with a red line projection on the floor.  This system has been highly successful in improving safety and preventing workplace accidents in industrial aisles. The gates can be easily installed at the entrance of each aisle, warning forklift drivers when there are other vehicles or operators in the same aisle.

Poor, low, or no visibility is a high-risk factor and a frequent cause of workplace accidents.

In our previous post we talked about the importance to improve control of spaces where pedestrian and forklifts coexist, and in this direction we want to highlight our blind Spot Solution (BS) for blind angle areas. This tool minimises the risks of collisions between forklifts and pedestrians and prevents vehicle collisions in areas with limited visibility. It uses traffic lights to indicate the right of way for drivers and pedestrians who carry tags that emit light signals when detected by an activator. Subsequently, the traffic light indicates the right of way, helping to organise traffic in challenging contexts.

The BS System is very easy to install, and it only requires a RFID trigger, traffic lights, a personal key ring for operators and tags for the forklifts. Pedestrians can carry the tags easily in their key rings or with their ID cards, for example, and so can the forklifts.

This is a particularly helpful solution in loading and unloading areas; when manoeuvring in areas with low visibility; in areas where pedestrians and forklifts intersect; and in spaces with a lot of traffic and forklift movement.

Being able to organise everyday movement in industrial spaces is a fundamental part of achieving better results in terms of occupational safety, reducing risks, and avoiding workplace accidents.

That’s why in this post, we would like to highlight two of the tools in Claitec’s catalogue that are designed to help us achieve greater efficiency in this aspect.

1) The LSA (Low Speed Area) Solution: an electronic safety system whose main function is to limit the speed at which forklifts circulate.
This system is specially designed to complement the safety tools of forklifts and reduce their speed in areas where there are employees on foot and other pedestrians.
The LSA solution is a great ally in reducing accidents, collisions, and impacts between vehicles, often caused by speeding.
Once the system is installed, its operation is very simple and it requires no action on the part of the operator: the forklift equipped with this solution reacts when entering an area where the use of the system was determined, and thus activates a signal that leads it to adapt to the established limit, which it may refer to as a “slow” or “fast” zone. This helps organise traffic and operations, as well as preventing accidents.

2) The NAS solution for Narrow Aisle Safety, is designed to minimise the risks of collision between forklifts in limited space areas. The NAS system warns drivers, through a traffic light, of the presence of another vehicle in a narrow aisle.
The forklifts incorporate coded reflective strips for this purpose which, when detected by sensors, activate the traffic lights installed in the corresponding aisle.
From that moment on, and as long as the forklift remains in the aisle, the traffic light indicates its presence in the area to other approaching vehicles or pedestrians.
It is an easy-to-install tool, extremely robust and durable.
