The coexistence between machinery or work vehicles and operators within the same workplace can be extremely challenging. However, with proper planning and the right tools, it is possible to achieve the safe interaction of humans and machines in industrial spaces, reducing risks and preventing workplace accidents.

Claitec has have developed various solutions to enhance safety standards and prevent workplace accidents. The 3 tools highlighted below are just some of the devices we can use to improve the coexistence of machinery and operators within the same workspace.

1) PAS Solution: One of Claitec’s flagship tools that continues to prove its effectiveness day after day for our customers! The Pedestrian Alert System (PAS) alerts forklift drivers when it detects a person within adjustable distances of 1 to 11 meters. It is a unique system capable of differentiating between people and objects, and it can even detect operators behind a wall or a shelf. Pedestrians simple wear a tag which, when detected by the system installed on the forklifts, alerts the driver with light signals. The warning received by the driver immediately warns him or her that there is a person near their work area, enabling them to take necessary precautions and avoid issues.

2) PSG Gate: The PSG (Pedestrian Safety Gate) is a safety gate designed to reduce risk situations in workspaces. This system has two functionalities: creating safe pedestrian crossings and restricting entry to unauthorised personnel. The PSG can also be easily combined with other solutions to stop pedestrians from crossings if a forklift is detected nearby, even in low-visibility areas. It can be supplied with additional features such as traffic lights, other visual indicators, sensors, and manual emergency buttons.

3) VSG Door: The Virtual Safety Gate is a virtual gate that activates when access is prohibited in a specific area or intersection, alerting traffic with a red line projection on the floor.  This system has been highly successful in improving safety and preventing workplace accidents in industrial aisles. The gates can be easily installed at the entrance of each aisle, warning forklift drivers when there are other vehicles or operators in the same aisle.

Poor, low, or no visibility is a high-risk factor and a frequent cause of workplace accidents.

In our previous post we talked about the importance to improve control of spaces where pedestrian and forklifts coexist, and in this direction we want to highlight our blind Spot Solution (BS) for blind angle areas. This tool minimises the risks of collisions between forklifts and pedestrians and prevents vehicle collisions in areas with limited visibility. It uses traffic lights to indicate the right of way for drivers and pedestrians who carry tags that emit light signals when detected by an activator. Subsequently, the traffic light indicates the right of way, helping to organise traffic in challenging contexts.

The BS System is very easy to install, and it only requires a RFID trigger, traffic lights, a personal key ring for operators and tags for the forklifts. Pedestrians can carry the tags easily in their key rings or with their ID cards, for example, and so can the forklifts.

This is a particularly helpful solution in loading and unloading areas; when manoeuvring in areas with low visibility; in areas where pedestrians and forklifts intersect; and in spaces with a lot of traffic and forklift movement.

Being able to organise everyday movement in industrial spaces is a fundamental part of achieving better results in terms of occupational safety, reducing risks, and avoiding workplace accidents.

That’s why in this post, we would like to highlight two of the tools in Claitec’s catalogue that are designed to help us achieve greater efficiency in this aspect.

1) The LSA (Low Speed Area) Solution: an electronic safety system whose main function is to limit the speed at which forklifts circulate.
This system is specially designed to complement the safety tools of forklifts and reduce their speed in areas where there are employees on foot and other pedestrians.
The LSA solution is a great ally in reducing accidents, collisions, and impacts between vehicles, often caused by speeding.
Once the system is installed, its operation is very simple and it requires no action on the part of the operator: the forklift equipped with this solution reacts when entering an area where the use of the system was determined, and thus activates a signal that leads it to adapt to the established limit, which it may refer to as a “slow” or “fast” zone. This helps organise traffic and operations, as well as preventing accidents.

2) The NAS solution for Narrow Aisle Safety, is designed to minimise the risks of collision between forklifts in limited space areas. The NAS system warns drivers, through a traffic light, of the presence of another vehicle in a narrow aisle.
The forklifts incorporate coded reflective strips for this purpose which, when detected by sensors, activate the traffic lights installed in the corresponding aisle.
From that moment on, and as long as the forklift remains in the aisle, the traffic light indicates its presence in the area to other approaching vehicles or pedestrians.
It is an easy-to-install tool, extremely robust and durable.

At Claitec we have often witnessed that a significant portion of risks and workplace accidents in industrial companies occur in shared spaces between work vehicles and operators.
Collisions, impacts, injuries, and damages are just some of the most common consequences in such spaces when there are insufficient occupational safety measures in place.

Thanks to the feedback from our customers, we have developed a tailor-made solution to address this problem: the Crossing Guard, an innovative device installed at warehouse heights to help prevent collisions at intersections.
This system protects both operators and vehicles, making a significant contribution to occupational safety by reducing risks and preventing workplace accidents.

Its operation is very simple and practical: as a vehicle or person approach the intersection area, they receive visual alerts from the traffic lights and the projection of the bluespot or VAS projector to determine if they have the right of way or not.

This ensures increased safety to prevent collisions.

The Crossing Guard system uses radar technology, which is capable of differentiating between a person or a forklift passing through as well as detecting if the forklift is approaching or leaving the intersection.

The system is extremely versatile and specifically designed to be used in warehouses, depots, loading docks, or industrial spaces with high-risk intersections where there is a convergence of operators and loading machinery.
Furthermore, it features a robust aluminium structure, and its installation and handling at heights are straightforward.

Additionally, it is essential to note that neither the operators nor the forklifts need to carry a device to be detected with this technology.

Another highlight is the design of the equipment, which includes fins for light separation to prevent other traffic lights from being visible from the same angle, thus avoiding confusion.

Warehouses are one of the most important areas in any industry. In a way, they are the neurological centres where workers and machinery converge and where all types of work activity are at its most intense, day and night, often without a pause..

To ensure the efficient management of resources, the overall improvement in operators’ safety and to eradicate work accidents, it’s vital that a strategic planning of our industrial warehouses be carried out.
A comprehensive look at these spaces and the analysis of existing tools to improve the functioning of these sites will allow us to take very important steps towards safety.

In this post we list 15 key areas in any industrial warehouse, and explain some valuable tools for the improvement of safety and accident avoidance in such spaces:

  1. Vehicle parking. This is the area specifically planned to park company vehicles and industrial machinery. What important safety measures can we take in the parking are? Have one single parking space and concentrate all vehicles in this area. Park all cars in reverse. This is important as it ensures full visibility when removing the vehicles, and it allows for a quick evacuation should it be necessary. You can find out more information about this topic here.

  2. Space for manoeuvring. This is the area intended for work vehicles to carry out all the manoeuvres and necessary tasks for loading and unloading, for docking and undocking the merchandise. In this type of spaces, it’s important to support drivers with clear signage and traffic lights as this helps improve the flow and efficiency of work

  3. Loading and/or unloading docks. While the two previous areas were located outside of the warehouse building, the loading and unloading docks are designed and equipped with the means and space to load and unload the goods in the vehicles in the safest and most efficient possible way. The LSA (Low Speed Area Solution) helps improve safety in this workspace by limiting the speed limits in forklifts and other work vehicles. The Truck Docking System is also a very helpful and useful assistant in this type of work areas.

  4. Reception Bays. A very high intensity traffic area, this very important space is design to receive and process merchandise and ensure that all goods have arrived according to plan. It is here where operators and forklifts coexist the most, so by using the PAS (Pedestrian Alert System) we will be minimising the risk of having pedestrians ran over and avoiding any type of work accident.

  5. Storage area. This is where the merchandise is to be efficiently and properly stored and controlled, using the storage environment that best suits the characteristics of the products. In these spaces the corridors are the main arteries and, therefore, the proper management of work in such places is essential to avoid errors and gain efficiency. The Narrow Aisle Safety (NAS) solution helps prevent accidents between forklifts in this area while the CAS-G2 forklift anti-collision system warns drivers when it detects other vehicles in nearby areas and/or in risk situations.

  6. Picking area. Here, the customers’ orders are prepared. It usually is a space within the area destined for storage, or a separate area on its own. To facilitate the flow and movement of forklifts we recommend the Traffic Control System used in GSK which separates vehicles from operators at work.

  7. Manipulation zone. In this area is where tasks such as re-labelling, shrink wrapping, packaging change and product recovery take place and as such forklift and truck drivers interact constantly. That’s why we recommend the implementation of the Pedestrian Alert System or the Low Speed Area solution, to help limit the speed of all the vehicles.

  8. Order control area. A space committed to ensuring the qualitative and quantitative control of the merchandise that has been prepared for the customers.

  9. Dispatch Bay. The prepared and controlled orders are placed here and remain in this space until the loading and shipment time.

  10. .Returns area. This is where the merchandise returned or rejected by the customers is stored. Here, reverse logistics are applied.

  11. .Battery charging area. Every warehouse has a space specially dedicated to the maintenance and recharging of the electrical handling equipment, as well as to the repair or rearrangement of other tools used in the daily management of the merchandise. In this space, it is highly recommended to use a solution that limits the speed of the vehicles to make the site safer and reduce the number of accidents

  12. .Pallets and empty containers area. This is the space dedicated to the storage of pallets and empty containers that are necessary for the storage and preparation of orders.

  13. .Administration and services. Every warehouse has a space where all administration and accounting matters are handled. Other similar areas include changing rooms, dining room and smoking room, among many other spaces where operators can rest and ensure their wellbeing. Both the TAG T-10R badge and the PAS Solution contribution enormously to guarantee the personal safety of employees and the reduction of accidents at work. The TAG T-10R is a device that combines dual RFID technology – passive and active which allows our customers to maintain the functionality of existing access control, adding a PAS (pedestrian alert) safety.

  14. .Waste area. Here industrial waste is stored, and recyclable, non-recyclable, and hazardous waste matter is divided. We highly recommend the use of the Hazardous Areas Solution, designed to prevent operators from falling to pits or conveyor belts and to minimise accidents in presses, crushers and compactors. It also allows perimeter detections in pits.

  15. .Other areas. Other work areas are specific to the characteristics and activity of each industry and require customised solutions and measures to achieve better safety at work. These include cold rooms, quarantine areas or valuable storage areas, among many others.

We have two exciting new additions to Claitec’s team!

Adrià was initially introduced to Claitec as part of his higher degree internship in DAW (Development of Web Applications). However, after the successful completion of his internship, he became part of the R+D Claitec team.

Adrià has studies in Microcomputer Systems and Networks, Multiplatform Application Development, and Web Application Development.

From a young age, he has been immersed in the world of video games, which sparked his passion for technology, computers, and particularly programming. His favorite pastime is immersing himself in captivating stories, whether through books, films/series, video games, or music.

Xavier is joining us to provide support to the marketing and corporate design department.

He holds a degree in Graphic Design from ERAM University School and has also completed a Digital Marketing program at EAE Business School.

In addition, he is a talented illustrator with expertise in creating captivating motion graphics. He has a deep passion for cinema and animation, and he is an avid collector of art books.

Today, we would like highlight three of Claitec’s tools which are currently offering great results to our clients in helping improve the safety of their workers in different industries.

1) The VAS system (Safety Alert Visualisation system). This helpful tool warns pedestrians and/or forklifts in risky situations by projecting signals on the ground. It greatly contributes to the safety of people in industrial spaces, since it provides highly visible signals that are detected by all, sorting traffic out and preventing accidents. The VAS system stands out for being effective, visible, durable. It’s extremely easy to combine with Claitec’s developments.

2) The PAS system. One of Claitec’s most used solutions, the Pedestrian Alert System warns forklift drivers when it detects a person at adjustable distances from 1 to 11 meters. It is a unique system capable of differentiating people from objects. It even detects operators who are behind a wall or a shelf! Pedestrians simply carry the tags with them and, when these are detected by the system previously installed on the forklift, they warn the driver. This solution minimises the number of accidents and it reduces the risk of pedestrians being ran over in industries.

3) PSG system. The Pedestrian Safety Gate is designed to reduce risk situations, improving pedestrian safety in crossings, and restricting the circulation of non-protected personnel. The PSG combines with the TCS Traffic Control System to block pedestrians from crossings in the event of the nearby presence of a forklift. It is a practical and very effective solution.
