In our continuous search for new and innovative ways to provide helpful solutions for our customers, the team at Claitec has developed a very practical multifunction tag that replaces and unites the tasks performed by other products in one single unit.

Introducing the MT-50 – a new device capable of performing the same functions of the TT-50, TZ-TAG, TZ2-TAG (BI / UNI). This new tag does the same job as all these other devices while also adding power, RF and LF improvements typical of a T -10R, among other things.

The MT-50 can easily be configured using a simple switch to perform the test tag functions which, until now were carried out by the TT-50 – a device designed to oversee the correct functioning of both the RF communications as well as the safety zone generated by the AC-50 Activator.

The MT-50 also performs the tasks of the TZ-Tag – a small device that allows us to detect any forklift equipped with an AC-50 in an established safety zone. Thanks to these devices, a safety area can be delimited in a physical space without needing anyone with the T-10 keyring to be present. This way, when a forklift enters that safety area, the AC-50 triggers an alarm signal on the vehicle, and it even limits its speed.

In addition to the above, the MT-50 also includes the same capabilities of the bidirectional and unidirectional TZ2-TAG designed to detect a forklift equipped with an AC-50 in a safety zone. Thanks to these devices it is possible to delimit a safety perimeter in a physical space without needing anyone with the T-10 keyring to be present. When a forklift enters the safety area, the TZ2-TAG will activate a relay.

Advantages of the MT-50 Tag:

The new tag presents many advantages when compared to its predecessors, including:

  • Better detection
  • Greater range (going from 5m to 7m in LF -21KHz-)
  • Better communication at HF ​​(2.4GHz). This means that it is a lot easier to detect in places where the TZ2-tag and the TZ-TAG were difficult to detect
  • It is connected through an IP65 connector
  • It is easier to install
  • It incorporates a relay
  • It can be expanded with additional outputs and inputs
  • The configuration of the TZ2 and TT-50 function is easily done through switch

This Wednesday, April 28 marks another World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and at Claitec we could not agree more with the motto that the International Labor Organization (ILO) proposes this year: “anticipate, prepare and respond to crises” as well as with its call to “invest today in resilient occupational health and safety systems”.

According to the organisation itself, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced us all to face unprecedented challenges which have severely impacted our workspaces. Given this current situation we need our workplaces to be resilient and to able to cope with this type of crises, both today and in the future. And we need to be able to learn from these experiences and make the most of them.

In turn, this date is a good opportunity to put a focus on the importance of anticipating problems, preparing for, and strengthening our health and safety systems in our workplaces. We need to understand that investment in health and safety at work brings immediate benefits and it allows us to preserve a firm’s most precious asset – the integrity of each of the members of our teams.

Similarly, we should also talk about the leading role acquired by technological solutions that have helped us respond to new needs and highlight the great contribution technology makes in the construction of safer and healthier spaces – from accident prevention to helping avoid further contagion, for instance.

In this sense, at Claitec we are immensely proud to have contributed with the development of a solution that ensures social distancing – the T-10R SD (Social Distance Sensor). Based on the older T-10R, the T-10R SD incorporates a modification designed to alert operators when the programmed safety distance between people in the same room is breached.

This innovative tool focuses on monitoring proximity, in such a way as to maintain the established physical distance between people, helping us preventing contagions. The technology applied in this device is also used to avoid vehicle collisions in the CAS-G2 tool and can be combined with the PAS system, designed to warn drivers when an operator is detected nearby.

In conclusion, on this World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we call for all of us to continue to be responsible and innovative in our search for workspaces with fewer workplace accidents and fewer daily risks. On many occasions, the incorporation of technology to our industries is seen as a problem or a challenge, at the very least. Many people and many fields are guided by false misconceptions about the use of technology in different jobs. The notion that technology is here to displace workers and their tasks is one such misconception.

However, it is important to respond to these new situations with calm and information and trying to understand that most of these tools are not designed to displace anyone’s job, but rather, to complement, assist and help people optimise their performance.

  1. Assistance in the event of forgetfulness: We are all humans and inevitably we make mistakes. When we apply technology to our workspaces it assists us in preventing that those moments of distraction end up having serious repercussions at work, causing accidents or losses we can regret. The T-10R Badge tag is a clear example of this. An adaptation of the T-10R tag , this device is also a card holder which allows the operator to carry only one object that includes both the security tag and the personal identification card. Thanks to this technology any possible human errors, oversights, or losses – which are generally the causes of accidents or similar problems – are easily  prevented.

  2. Accident response: We all take our accident prevention role very seriously. However, accidents do happen and in those cases we need to have the tools to respond and continue to preserve the health and safety of our people. That’s why at Claitec we have developed a range of tools that are activated only when the operator has an accident. One of these is the FPS (Fall Protection System). In the event of a worker falling, this device automatically and instantaneously stops the machine from operating, thus preventing even greater risks.

  3. Overall support: Technology is a very intelligent ally to lend us a hand when humans can’t find the solution to very challenging situations. To illustrate this, let us talk about the PAS and LSA devices. Both of these can be easily adapted to work at -30°C, providing safety for workers in these harsh environments and thus preventing nasty accidents.

Unloading a forklift, stacking a container with cargo destined for export, removing all stock from a warehouse…

All these and other similar actions tend to happen at times when visibility conditions are less than ideal or even at night. We know only too well that industry related tasks know no schedules or excuses and, as such, we must always be prepared to deal with them!

That’s why today we’d like to share the many possibilities offered by three of the solutions designed at Claitec. Three solutions that will help perform any tasks in low visibility areas without any risks and without exposing the integrity of our team members.

  1. The PAS System, an extremely useful tool that warns forklift drivers as it detects pedestrians at adjustable distances of 1 to 6.5 meters. All pedestrians need to do is carry electronic tags that alert the driver by sending light signals when a forklift senses them.

  2. The TDS Solution (Truck Docking System) considers the work dynamics of cargo trucks, and it aims at minimizing the operators’ risk of being run over. It comprises detection sensors, a control unit and traffic lights. Its mission is to warn the forklift driver, by means of the traffic light about the presence of operators in the manoeuvring space.

  3. The BS Solution (Blind Spots) is a system designed to improve traffic flow and to avoid accidents involving industrial use vehicles and preventing workers from being ran over. The BS solution for blind spots is particularly useful in loading and unloading areas and manoeuvring areas with poor visibility.

This solution indicates – by using traffic lights or previously installed warning lights – who has preference at industrial space intersections – be it drivers or be it workers on foot. Pedestrians must carry the tags, either in their key rings or with their identification cards, and so do forklifts. Tags will emit light signals when detected by an activator and the traffic light or warning indicator will indicate who has preference, thus avoiding accidents or risky situations.

Low temperatures are hitting the Northern Hemisphere right now making our work routines in loading docks, large storage spaces or on surfaces highly exposed to the cold more complicated than usual.

But not to worry! In this post we’d like to share some useful tips and tools to help you deal with harshly low temperatures.

First, let’s look at the risks that come with cold weather and how it can affect our work.

Thermal stress, hypothermia and freezing are some of the main problems associated with cold, presenting symptoms such as chills, fatigue, loss of coordination and confusion, respiratory conditions, and others.

So, what kind of measures can we take to prevent these risks?

First of all, it’s important to be very clear about the need to intervene on those factors that affect a person’s thermal balance.

Then, we must apply specific routines that support the operator in this environment. For example: organising and dividing tasks in a way that are less difficult for each operator, taking into account the need for exercise and mobility of all body parts and ingesting food and diets that are appropriate to these temperatures.

We must remember that technological solutions can become a great ally when working in complex circumstances such as low temperatures. For example, we should work with tools designed for work in areas with fog or low speed, or tools that have a special duration and capacity against the cold.

As earlier discussed in an earlier post, the PAS Pedestrian Alert System is one of the most recommended tools in very low temperature scenarios. This tool is extremely useful for protecting people, and it adapts very easily to any work scenario.

We should also highlight the LSA (Low Speed Area) System, designed to reduce the speed of vehicles inside cold rooms, for example, thus achieving much safer environments and greatly loweringthe probability of accidents of work.

As you’re probably already aware of, in this space we always like to offer different recommendations and measures to help improve safety in any industrial spaces – be it in relation to the operation of machinery, to the operators’ care and responsibilities to prevent accidents, and to the many ways in which our systems contribute to creating safer workplaces.

That’s why in today’s post we’d like to share 10 key actions we should always keep in mind to help prevent accidents and achieve much safer workspaces:

  1. Clarity: We must be clear when defining risks and providing information on the safety measures to be implemented in our industry in general, and in each area in particular.

  2. Communication: We must be aware that whatever it is that we don’t communicate to our public, it will not exist for them – whether they are operators, forklift drivers, visitors to the plant, external inspectors or other people who visit our facilities. It is key to invest time and resources in the correct communication of safety rules.

  3. Teamwork: It is essential to be clear that we all depend on each other, and that a distraction, however minimal it may seem, can have grave consequences for another person.

  4. Control: It is equally important to carry out permanent monitoring of the working and working conditions in the industry, in order to be able to detect any fault or unsafe condition in the workspace in time.

  5. Documentation: Any work failure or accident must be properly documented, locating the root of the problem, identifying the work area and the elements involved in the incident. This allows acting on the evidence and avoiding the repetition of similar accidents.

  6. Training: Investing in training is the only way to be up to date on the knowledge of the new realities of the industries, and, therefore, of the new dangers and new responsibilities that people have when taking care of themselves and their peers.

  7. Keeping tools up-to-date: new technologies constantly provide us with innovative possibilities to create much safer and more efficient work spaces, and help us reduce the number of occupational accidents.   8. Inspection and measurement: Performing inspections and measurements of environmental or work factors is vital. Forgetting this golden rule for a single second can have terrible consequences, especially when we work in front of heavy trucks, or in industrial spaces with large machinery.

We know that the intense daily dynamics of our workplaces sometimes lead to confusion and forgetfulness, but we are also aware that the slightest human error can lead to serious work accident. At Claitec, we continually seek to develop technological tools that complement and facilitate the work of our collaborators adding safety levels to the work of our forklift drivers. Our latest example is the Active Inhibitor, a forklift driver’s key ally.

The Active Inhibitor consists of an electronic device that is installed next to the driver’s seat to inhibit his key fobs as he enters the vehicle. In this way, the drivers’ key fob will not be detected, and for the rest of the systems it will appear that only the forklift is circulating, thus avoiding problems or cross detections that reduce the effectiveness and pace of work.

In other words, this tool and its functionalities allow the operator to drive the forklift safely and to keep the Pedestrian Detection system activated in order to avoid accidents when circulating in the work area or neighbouring spaces.

In addition, it should be noted that the main advantage between the mobile T-10 inhibitor and the fixed inhibitor is that the driver does not have to perform any operation to be inhibited inside the cabin, being an ideal complement and a great ally for his or her workdays. And once the operator leaves the forklift, the tag will be operational again without requiring any other action.

Developed directly by Claitec’s R&D’s analysis and observation of the behaviours and experiences of users and drivers from various industries, Claitec’s Active Inhibitor is a perfect complement to its current range of existing inhibitors.
